Finnish-themed slots: what the theme actually changes

A Finnish-themed slot and the mathematical model behind it

A domestic subject sells: forest, lake, northern lights, folklore. So it is worth asking precisely what a Finnish theme actually changes in a game. The answer is short – it changes everything visible and nothing that can be calculated.

What the theme changes

  • Symbols and artwork. A sauna, a bear and a reindeer are pictures on the reels; the same mathematics would run just as well under fruit.
  • Sound. Music and effects shape the atmosphere, and through it how long the game keeps feeling pleasant.
  • The names of bonus features. A homely name is a frame around free spins, not a separate mechanic.
  • How quickly the game feels like your own. Familiarity lengthens sessions, and that is the purpose of the design.

What the theme does not change

Property Where it comes from Depends on the theme
Return to player (RTP) The game's mathematical model, sometimes in several versions No
Volatility The distribution of win sizes in the model No
Hit frequency How often a spin produces a win No
Maximum win The ceiling in the model, stated in the game information No
Symbols, sound, animations Presentation Yes

About trademarks, plainly

Lists of ”Finnish” games circulate online featuring well-known characters from books or television. Treat them with caution. Well-known characters are protected trademarks, licensed games are made rarely and always visibly in the rights holder's name. If a game is not on the studio's own site, it does not exist – however many websites mention it.

This page previously carried a list naming such characters. It has been removed, because it could not be substantiated.

Where the real numbers are

  1. Open the game and look for Info, Rules or a question mark in the menu.
  2. Find ”RTP” or ”return to player”. It is a percentage, for example 96.2%.
  3. Check whether the game has more than one RTP version. The same title can exist at different return rates, and the difference shows only in the info panel.
  4. Read the volatility and the maximum win multiplier. High volatility means rarer but larger wins, not a larger total return.
  5. Work out the house edge: 96% RTP means a cost of 4% on every euro that circulates through the game.

Questions and answers

Do Finnish-themed games have a better return rate?

There is no reason to assume so. RTP varies from game to game regardless of subject, and every game's figure is in its info panel.

Does the theme affect the chance of winning?

No. Results are drawn by a random number generator that treats symbols as numbers.

Why is it still worth knowing about domestic themes?

Because they lengthen sessions. That is a good reason to set a time limit precisely in the games that feel most like your own.
