Blackjack basic strategy: a table, not a secret

There is nothing secret about blackjack basic strategy. It is a published table that gives, for every combination of your hand and the dealer's up card, the mathematically best move. That is exactly why it works – and exactly why nobody who knows the subject sells it as a secret.
What basic strategy is
Blackjack is a rarity in a casino: the player's decisions affect the result. In every situation there is one move with the best expected value – hit, stand, double or split. The collection of those moves is basic strategy. Under common rules, played correctly, it brings the house edge down to roughly half a per cent, where poor play can leave it several per cent.
Note what that does and does not mean. Half a per cent is still a house edge: €100 wagered costs about 50 cents on average. Basic strategy makes the game cheaper, not profitable.
Three rules worth knowing by heart

What does not work
- Counting cards online. In online blackjack the deck is effectively shuffled every hand, and live tables often use continuous shufflers. There is nothing for a count to hold on to.
- Doubling the stake after a loss. After ten losses in a row the stake is 1,024 times the first one, and the table limit arrives before that. The expected value does not move at all.
- Side bets. Pairs, 21+3 and the rest are priced distinctly worse than the base game.
- A ”hot table”. Previous hands say nothing about the next one.
What a player actually adjusts
- The table rules: whether blackjack pays 3:2 or 6:5. The difference is large and it is printed in the table rules.
- The size of the stake relative to the evening's budget.
- The length of the session. The more hands, the closer the result moves to the house edge.
- Whether to play basic strategy or to play on feel.
Bonuses deserve the same attention: table games often contribute only partly to wagering, or not at all, which can make a blackjack bonus worth something quite different from what the headline suggests.
Questions and answers
Is basic strategy allowed?
Yes. It is public information and it follows from the rules of the game, not from knowledge of the deck.
Can you win at blackjack in the long run?
Not at ordinary online tables. Basic strategy reduces the expected loss; it does not turn it positive.
Should you take insurance when the dealer shows an ace?
No. Insurance is a bet of its own, priced distinctly worse for the player than the base game.
