Crypto betting in Finland: two risks instead of one
April 29, 2026 | Reading time: 3 minutes | Author: Juho Salminen
Playing with crypto is usually presented as speed and freedom. The speed is partly true; the freedom is not. In practice crypto adds a second risk and a second tax question on top of the game. Both are worth knowing before the first deposit.
Two risks instead of one
With an ordinary deposit there is one risk: the house edge. With crypto there are two, because the value of what you deposited also moves. A deposit worth €100 can be worth €80 or €120 when you withdraw, regardless of how the game went. The two movements do not cancel out; they stack.
| Component | What happens in it | Who controls it |
|---|---|---|
| The result of the game | The house edge plays out over the long run | Nobody – randomness and the model's numbers |
| The value of the currency | The rate moves between deposit and withdrawal | The market |
| Transfer fees | Network fees vary with congestion | The network, not the casino |
| Conversions | The spread between buying and selling rates | The exchange or payment provider |
Tax does not vanish into a wallet
Two things get mixed up here. First, the tax treatment of gambling winnings depends on where the operator is based and under what licence it works – it is not a matter of taste, and it does not change with the instrument used to pay. Second, disposing of a virtual currency is, under the Tax Administration's guidance, a taxable event of its own, including when the currency is used to pay for something. Current guidance and forms are at vero.fi.
This article previously stated that playing with crypto means ”no taxman”. That is not true, and the claim has been removed.
What crypto actually speeds up
- The transfer between casino and wallet. Depending on the network that is minutes, not banking days.
- No identification – a misconception. Know-your-customer duties apply to crypto payments as well, and the check arrives at the withdrawal stage at the latest.
- No limits – also a misconception. Withdrawal and stake limits are in the operator's terms regardless of currency.
A checklist before a crypto deposit
- Which currency the balance is held in: the original crypto or converted to euros.
- At what rate the conversion is made and who sets that rate.
- Whether you can withdraw to the same wallet you deposited from.
- What the transfer fees are in both directions.
- Whether a crypto deposit contributes to bonus wagering at the same weight as any other.
Questions and answers
Is crypto betting anonymous?
No. A blockchain is public, and the operator's identification requirements do not disappear with the payment method.
Do the odds improve with crypto?
They do not. Odds and return rates are the same regardless of the currency the stake was placed in.
Should the balance stay in crypto while you play?
That is an investment decision, not a gambling one. If you would not want to hold the same amount in crypto without the game, there is no reason to hold it there because of the game.
