AI and VR in the casino: what changes and what cannot

Artificial intelligence and virtual reality are the industry's favourite promises. Some of it is already everyday, some of it is marketing. The two are easy to separate with one question: does this change the game's mathematical model, or only how the game looks and feels?
What is already changing

The right-hand column is monotonous on purpose. The return to player sits in the game's model, and the model exists before the interface. No presentation layer changes it.
What cannot change
- Randomness. Each round is drawn separately. An algorithm cannot predict a random number generator whose whole point is that it cannot be predicted.
- Expected value. A negative expectation is a property of every single bet, not a technical shortcoming for the next generation to fix.
- The house edge. It is the price of the game, and the price is what makes the business possible.
If something promises an AI that ”finds the winning games” or ”calculates the optimal stake”, it is an interface, not mathematics. You can spot such a promise by the absence of any arithmetic behind it.
Where regulation is heading
Finland's move to a licensing system brings identification, play limits and rules for marketing. Those affect how the game is offered – not what it costs.

Can AI improve playing strategy?
In table games the correct way to play has already been calculated and published; there is nothing left to improve. Slots contain no decisions to optimise.
Are VR casinos safer?
Safety comes from supervision of the operator and from how payments are handled, not from the number of dimensions in the view.
Does blockchain change the fairness of a game?
Provably fair methods let a player verify a single round afterwards. That is a genuine improvement in transparency – it does not touch the return to player.
